I have a 1999 Ford ranger and the other day I started hearing a clicking or vibrating sound when I went over a bump. When I would brake, I would hear a thud and feel something at my feet, coming from the tire, like a bump. I took off my tire and noticed my brake caliper was loose. I tightened the bolts as tight as I could and drove the truck. 2 days later and the caliper is loose again.Hand tighten the 5/8” nut and verify everything is aligned. Tighten the nut to draw the inner bearing race in place. No heat is required. If the nut gets so tight it can not be turned, the race is cocked. You will have remove everything and tap out the race with a punch and hammer, then start over.

  • Jun 14, 2012 · I'm pretty sure those screws are there to push the rotor off the hub if it's stuck. You'd actually tighten them, separating the two parts. I've done a lot of brake jobs. Apr 13, 2014 · The leak looked to be coming from the piston area, so I replaced the whole caliper (thanks to the video on the rear caliper replacement on the ’99 Acura RL). After putting everything together and bleeding the brake line, I took the car for a drive and my brakes were VERY spongy/squishy – I had to practically stand on the brake pedal to stop. The German method I suspect has failed when used to "tighten" brake caliper bolts. When I worked on 501/T56 gas turbine engines we used dry moly lubed mixed with oil for most of the fasteners. Usually in the turbine sections we used anti seize for the thermocouples and misc stuff that took extreme heat. IIRC.
Also, it seems like when I mount and tighten the lugs on the tire is when it starts making the grinding noise on the new pads and rotors. Can I just grind off the part of the caliper bracket that is rubbing or can you pin point to me what is happening here, because I've installed plenty pads on rotors and this is the first time this occured. Once you have been doing the job for awhile you understand just how tight something should be. Ive used air impacts, cordless impacts and your standard 3/8 or 1/2 ratchet and even a wrench. It allows fluid to the brake caliper when you press the brake pedal down, but doesnt allow fluid to travel back to master cylinder when you release the pedal. Perfect for the job but you may also need a helicoil kit to fix the steering knuckle before these even will screw in. Don’t over tighten and you’ll be fine. Use a silicon grease to make sure the calipers can move.
Try unclipping the retaining clip from the pad (keep the pad in the caliper) as you attempt to tighten the calipers. Sometimes the caliper will seat better that way. Looking at the pictures, yeah, the caliper bolt backed out and allowed the caliper to swing out and scrape the wheel. Caliper bolts should not back out, even if it’s not tightened to full spec. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was just stuck in the hole and then the tech forgot to come back and tighten it. At any rate, shop’s fault.
